Motorsport: Lulham speeds past older rivals

THERE seems no stopping Christopher Lulham’s rise to stardom.

The eight-year-old from Coldharbour was the youngest entrant in last year’s Formula 6 Championship in his 55mph Honda-powered cadet kart.

But Lulham, who started at Duke of Kent School in Ewhurst and has now moved on to Downsend in Leatherhead, did not let that worry him.

Taking on drivers as old as 13, he entered after winning a competition for 500 children organised and judged by Bill Sisley, owner of the Buckmore Park circuit in Kent, who trained both Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton at a similar stage before they went on to F1 titles.

Lulham built up a lead thanks to victories at Whilton Mill (Northants), Ellough Park Raceway (Sussex) and Clay Pigeon Raceway (Dorset), which meant his return to home territory at Buckmore Park for the final round left him needing to finish seventh or higher to ensure he took the title ahead of his more experienced rivals. Right from the start he moved into third and then went up a place on the second lap, knowing from that stage that just guiding his kart home would do the job.

He did so, in third spot, to become the youngest ever F6 cadet champion.

“He crossed the line with his fists punching the air in celebration,” said his proud father, Robert.

The youngster is now preparing to compete at the highest possible level with a full assault on the internationally recognised British Super One Championships in 2012.

Front Row at first attempt at Super One!

Front row at Three Sisters Race Cicuit

Chris Lulham made a ‘Wildcard’ entry to the final round of the 2011 Super One British Championships at Three Sisters Race circuit, Lancashire on the 15th/16th October.  This was his first experience of driving at national level and at 8 years old Chris was the youngest competitor in the 31 kart field. The entrants include the top under 13 year old drivers in the country and previous winners of the British Championships include both Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. The competition is intense and for those at the front of the Championship the stakes are very high.

The nervous anticipation as the time for qualifying approached was almost tangible. As timed qualifying started Chris went out on track searching for another quick driver to team up with in order to slipsteam down the long straights. An impromptu partnership with another quick driver was formed and circulting together they progressively picked up speed and their names rose rapidly up the live timing screens. With just 5 minutes left Chris’ lap time hit the top of the screens, he was the fastest one out there! In the following minutes his time was beaten, pushing him down to 5th, however as the final lap began, his head was ducked right down on the straight, he was visibly quick. Chris was second fastest and just 100th of a second off pole! An astonishing acheivement!

Chris takes the field round from P2

The 2 heats that followed delivered heavy contact at the first few corners which demoted the front two rows to the back, a real shame but he was not deterred, however a poor grid position for the final was now unavoidable.

The start of the Final was thrilling once again and after 10 laps, fifteen karts were battling to be at the front. The mover of the field however was Chris Lulham. He charged through the field like a train overtaking lap after lap. With just a few laps remaining Chris had clawed his way to be with the front group still battling for the lead. He would finish an impressive 11th with his best lap time only 1 tenth of a second off the fastest of the day. He received alot of congratulations from other drivers and teams in the paddock at the finish of his debut weekend.

This race can be seen on Motors TV on Tuesday 8th November at 6.45pm.

Chris is now looking forward to a full season at the British Super One Championships in 2012.

The Youngest F6 Champion in history!

On Saturday 8th October at Buckmore Park in Kent for the 7th and final round of the 2011 Formula 6 Championship a safe third place meant Chris Lulham became the youngest F6 Cadet Champion the sport has ever known.

Number 1

During the season long challenge of the F6 Championship Chris had built up a lead with wins at the ‘away’ circuits of Whilton Mill in Northamptonshire, Ellough Park Raceway in Sussex and Clay Pigeon Raceway in Dorset which meant he went into the final round needing to finish 7th or higher to secure the title.
Heat one was held on a track that was dry in parts and damp in others with the field split roughly 50:50 between slick and wet tyres (grooved). Those with wet tyres built an immediate lead which was eroded in the later laps by those with slicks but wet tyres turned out to be the better choice. Chris was on slicks and finished 6th leaving little room for error in the next heat.  At the start of heat two Chris was knocked into a spin and consequently found himself in last place at the end of lap 1, suddenly he had a mountain to climb to keep the title in sight. A determined and focused drive saw him put in fastest lap after fastest lap to recover to 5th place. For the final he had therefore qualified for 5th spot on the grid.

At the start Chris immediately moved to third and on the second lap moved up again to second place. He knew the title would be his now if he brought the kart safely home. He finished third with his fists punching the air in celebration! F6 Cadet Champion (for 8 to 13 year olds) acheived at only 8 years and  6 months.

Chris Lulham Finish 2nd at Buckmore Park Cadet Clubman

Chris Lulham qualified a  just respectable 7th in a strong field of 18 drivers for the 5th round of the Honda cadet clubman championship. By the end of the first heat Chris had moved up to 3rd and teammate Jean in 7th only 1.2 seconds behind the leader.

Chris maintained his 3rd place and Jean came home 4th. In the course of their battles the Ambition boys proved to be the fastest team out there setting 1st, 2nd and 4th fastest laps.

Grid positions for the Final were now set with Chris in 3rd. After a clean start he moved up to 2nd on lap six and  then started to hunt down the leader.

While laying a strong 4th on his Buckmore Park debut The Motor Racing Gods then struck a cruel blow to Jean Sammut and his engine developed a misfire which would result in his eventual retirement from the race a few laps later. A crushing Top Novice performance went unrewarded for him.

As the last lap board came out Chris had reeled in the leader to within a tenth of a second; coming up the hill towards the finish line Chris moved out of the slipstream to cross the line almost side by side but it wasn’t quite enough although a strong second place was his.

Chris wins again at Ellough International

Ellough Park Raceway hosted the 5th round out of 7 for the 2011 South Eastern F6 Championship on Saturday 30 July.

Up to 17 cadet drivers have been taking part in this year’s championship and they have produced close, exciting racing with the different weight classes serving to help reduce the handicap the younger boys face against the older, more experienced drivers.

Chris finished 1st, 2nd and 1st in the heats to give him pole for the final and  championship rival Jonathan Wilkes finished 2nd, 1st and 2nd giving him 2nd spot and in the process set up a grandstand showdown for the final.

For 15 laps they fought wheel to wheel with the Ambition driver taking victory by just one tenth of a second at the end so retaining his slim lead in the Championship.

Congratulations also to Thomas and Wesley for their second places.

So close to the lap record……

Ambition Motorsport made its presence felt with a strong 3 driver  line-up including Christopher Lulham for the July club meeting at the fast 850 metre circuit at Clay Pigeon in Dorset as part of a 32 Honda field. All 3 drivers showed front running pace throughout the day with Elliot finishing 2nd, 2nd and 4th in the heats and Charlie finishing 4th, 6th and 5th. This earned them positions in the front 2 rows for the final grid. Chris suffered various set backs leaving him with alot of work to do from 17th on the final grid.

Chris drove through the field up to 8th and in the process set a lap of time of 40.29, just 4 hundredths off the 2011 lap record of 40.25!
Next stop Buckmore on the weekend of 16/17th July.

Round 4 of F6 was held at Lydd on Saturday 2nd July where Chris qualified on pole for the heats and came home first in the first heat and second for the second one. 2nd place, but victory only a kart length away!

A very wet morning at Ellough Park for the non-MSA cadet race this weekend where the 20 drivers were constantly changing set-up. As the day went on the sun shined through and it was not long before the track had dried! Ambition Motorsport drivers Christopher Lulham, and Jean Sammut had a day of ups and downs a knock off the track for Jean.

As the day went on Ambition drivers showed their good pace and racing skill as Christopher Lulham finished first in one of the heats and Jean Sammut had a third place finish in one of the Heats.

Christopher secured a starting place of 2nd for the final.

During the 14 lap Final Christopher and Jean worked together as a team as Christopher held his 2nd place and Jean drove to 3rd place within the first lap!

During the final lap Jean faced a back marker and went around him wide losing his 3rd place as the top four drivers crossed the finish line together within a second of the each other! Christopher Lulham finished 2nd.

Chris wins his first MSA cadet race after just 8 weeks!

At the Whilton Mill international circuit for the 3rd round of the F6 championship, sponsored by Ambition Motorsport, the young Ambition drivers faced experienced competition. Chris blitzed the field in the heats with 2 first places and a third!  In the second heat there was a heart stopping moment at the end of the main straight, running at maximum speed, when he was put on the grass but just recovered before meeting the tyre barrier. He had comfortably secured pole for the final. The final was a lonely race, leading from lights to flag. However Fastest lap also belonged to him. Novice Chris 3rd overall from the back of the grid

Chris made his MSA race debut on 7th April 2011 for the first round of F6 at Bayford Meadows kart circuit. Novices were put at the back.
In both heats he worked his way up from last to 3rd and grided in 3rd overall for the final.

A great start took him 2nd place at the first corner and he began to look good for an overall 2nd place.
However a bump saw him down to third overall but he came away satisfied with his strong start to the F6 season. From now on there will be timed qualifying and 1st place is the target!
